HISTORY
Markham Co-Operative Preschool: Not "Just Another Preschool"
Parent participation is the special ingredient leading to quality experiences that our co-operative nursery school provides for families. This participation can be customized to your needs given the variety of tasks offered.
One Of Markham's Lowest Child/Teacher Ratios
In our bright and airy classroom our adult/child ratio is very low at less than 1:7.
Safety - A Top Concern
We strive to make our school and playground the safest it can be. A criminal reference check and a tuberculosis test are required for anyone working with the children. Markham Co-operative Preschool is a peanut/nut aware environment and an allergy list is posted for all parents to see to avoid bringing foods into the school that may cause an allergic reaction. Our children play in the completely fenced outdoor, CSA approved playground daily, weather permitting.
PROGRAM
The "Learn Through Play" philosophy aims to help the children develop an awareness of their capabilities and fosters social, emotional, creative, physical and intellectual development. The classroom environment and program components are strategically planned to promote discovery and learning. Our teachers are skilled at the art of integrating learning with play.
Our program is planned on a theme basis, with a new theme being introduced every couple of weeks. Daily program plans are posted, identifying the underlying purposes of the various activities offered.
Each child is an individual and while encouraged, is allowed to progress at his or her own rate thereby instilling confidence within. Enrichment activities are offered where appropriate.
At Markham Co-operative Preschool our ultimate goal is to provide a positive learning experience for children in order to build a foundation for a bright and confident future. The following is an outline of four development areas:
Social & Emotional Development
Strong self-esteem is nurtured as children are encouraged to express feelings and needs as well as show empathy and respect for each other as individuals. The children are given the opportunity to role-play, gaining knowledge of acceptable behaviour in a non-threatening environment. They are also encouraged to gain self-help skills through tidying up their share of the activities and to dress themselves (with assistance) for outside play.
Intellectual Development
Our child-centered program encourages the children to ask questions and contribute to the class room dynamic, promoting self-confidence. The children gain knowledge of concepts and awareness of their environment through theme discussions and field trips. The daily calendar reinforces their understanding of seasons, numbers and letters. Songs and stories will improve listening and language skills.
Creative Development
Children explore their creativity through several mediums such as painting, building, drawing, play dough, arts and crafts, and puppet theatre. Sensory and science experiences abound with the introduction of water, sand, sculpting and other such games - loads of fun for the children.
Physical Development
Our preschool incorporates physical activity into every class - to develop both the fine and gross motor skills. Manual dexterity is promoted through play with building blocks of all kinds, tile design, puzzles, laces, pegboards and arts and crafts. Large motor skills are targeted through supervised play with indoor and outdoor activities such as tunnels, swings, balance beams, large blocks and action songs.
Teachers
Our teachers are specialists in Early Childhood Education (E.C.E.) and are well experienced in preschool programs. They were selected not only for their education and experience, but also for their personal qualities of warmth, patience and sense of humour. Our assistant teachers have a number of years experience working with young children. Their enthusiasm and caring ways contribute greatly to the success of our program.
Facility
The preschool operates in the Box Grove Community Centre, which is run by the Town of Markham. This warm and charming historic building was a one-room schoolhouse at the turn of the century. Our location is minutes from Main Street, Markham and is a unique combination of rural and urban.
Expectations
You will be pleased with our preschool program when you see that your child has improved in his ability to:
